What defines femininity?
Is it the clothing? Is it the hair? Is it the DNA?
The reality is that femininity cannot be measured or easily defined. It is completely subjective and has a HUGE spectrum of possibilities from “stereotypical” femininity to more contemporary femininity!
So if you’re wondering how to be more feminine for crossdressing and gender expression, we’re here to break it down for you no matter what style you’re going for!
Initiate the Intimates!
While “stereotypical” femininity isn’t the only standard, we absolutely encourage it if it’s the style you’re going for whether you’re crossdressing or expressing your identity!
For a femme fatale or sexy look, foundations like lingerie, panties, and bras are the way to go. These staples not only help to display classic femininity, but they also help you feel powerful when you’re wearing them, either discreetly or as a main ensemble!
Panties and lingerie are also super versatile for many types of styles since they can be worn as undergarments or on their own. They can be shopped for either in-person in undergarment retailers, or they can be purchased online in plain packaging depending on your comfort level.

Dress to Express
Depending on your style, figuring out how to be more feminine for crossdressing and gender expression can either include a trip to your local outlets or an online hunt for the perfect maxi dress.
The classic feminine styles are dresses and skirts, but garments that have previously been marketed for men, such as pants or rugged jackets, can be repurposed to blend together gender norms into a unique style!
Any clothing piece can be a part of a feminine look if it’s tailored to your vision, especially with the aid of silhouette modifications. These modifications can help in adding femininity to a bodycon dress, plain collared shirt, or even a form-fitting suit.

Shine With Shoes
Heels are probably the first thing people think of when they think about “feminine shoes”, but the possibilities are endless!
A sporty look can be completed with sneakers, a casual look can use a pair of flats, and a sandy day at the beach would be impossible without sandals. Light colours, such as pinks or pastels, are marketed as feminine, but individual comfort levels and styles determine what shoes to wear with your look.
So there’s absolutely no pressure to wear heels if they cause walking difficulty or discomfort! We also promise Michelle Visage won’t read you for wearing flats either!
Shopping for shoes as a crossdresser or someone AMAB can be challenging, especially when trying to find the perfect style and size fit. In-store shopping is ideal for any type of shoe, but online shopping is also 100% possible through size charts, exchanges, and shoe inserts!
Wigs and Waxing
When thinking about how to be more feminine for crossdressing and gender expression, you may be wondering if you have to shave!
This is completely up to the individual, and while it’s considered more “feminine” by society to be shaved and plucked from head to toe, it is NOT necessary. Crossdressers (and women!) can definitely still be feminine with a beard or with body hair!
Long hair or hair accessorizing is also a common symbol of femininity, and this can be achieved by either growing out your hair or wearing a wig. While there are certainly tons of wig varieties, a synthetic wig is often the most affordable, styleable, and versatile type. They are also readily available online, with some even made by crossdressers!
We also encourage any hair styling or stylist suggestions in our comments section, or any tips for how to keep hair feminine instead of flat!
Accessories and Add-Ons
Last, but certainly not least, is accessories!
The feminine staples are perfume, jewellery, makeup, purses, or possibly Evening Gloves for the full Audrey Hepburn fantasy. BUT, they are not requirements for a feminine look! You can absolutely rock dessert smelling perfume without earrings if it fits your style!
Cosmetics are also never a requirement for crossdressing, but they are helpful in bringing out more soft features by contouring jawlines, rounding out foreheads, and feminizing a face in addition to jewellery.
Finding a foundation colour is also deceivingly simple since it’s generally the colour you would like your face to be instead of a perfect tone match.
For beginners, we recommend watching makeup tutorials by people with similar face shapes as yours or reading our comments section for any tips left from our community!
